You’ve probably seen the videos. A whole crowd dancing to the same chorus in the middle of a city square. A café covered in birthday banners and photocards. Fans queuing outside with lightsticks, tote bags and freebies in hand.

And then comes the obvious question: how did everyone know this was happening?

K-pop events can be surprisingly easy to miss. Many are organised by fans or small local businesses, so you won’t always hear about them through official artist accounts. You just need to know where to look.

What Kind of K-Pop Events Are There?

If you’re new to local K-pop events, these are some of the ones you’ll come across most often:

• Cupsleeve events and birthday cafés: Usually held to celebrate an idol’s birthday, a group anniversary or a comeback. Buy a drink and you’ll often receive a themed cupsleeve, photocard or other freebies.

• Random Play Dances: A mix of K-pop choruses plays and anyone who knows the choreography can join in. You can also just watch. No dancing required.

On Instagram, check posts from local fan accounts, K-pop shops, bubble tea cafés and previous event organisers. Once you find one active organiser in your area, you’ll usually find several more through their tagged posts and collaborations.

TikTok is especially useful if you want to see what an event actually looks like. Just check the date before getting excited. That perfect birthday café may have happened two years ago.

Follow Local K-Pop Shops and Cafés

K-pop shops often host trading days, pop-ups and special events of their own. They may also promote events organised by local fan groups.

The same goes for cafés, particularly bubble tea and dessert spots. If a venue has hosted one cupsleeve event, there’s a good chance it will host another. Follow the venue and check its tagged posts to see what has taken place there before.

Check Before You Go

Before heading out, read the event details carefully. Some events are free and open to walk-ins, while others require a ticket, RSVP or timed entry.

It’s also worth checking:

• Whether freebies are limited
• Minimum purchase requirements
• Accessibility information
• Rules for trading or selling
• Whether the event is official or fan-made
