Kpop and Community Wellness
This event highlights the important intersection between K-pop fandoms and mental well-being. According to data from 2022, more than one in every five adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness. Research indicates that when individuals possess a strong sense of community, they are less likely to experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.
A sense of belonging within a fandom includes several key pillars:
- Fulfillment of needs
- Group membership
- Influence
- Emotional connection
Social connections positively impact mental health by fostering deep, meaningful relationships that lead to vital social support during crises and difficult situations. By taking advantage of the strength found in shared interests, the K-pop community can improve subjective well-being and create safe, fair conditions for those living with mental illnesses.
